What does this dental appliance do?

I had one. Never saw it, but could feel it. It was part of a full mouth brace (traintracks as you call it i ume). The brace on the upper jaw was to pull the front teeth back. So I guess this bit was there to hold the back teeth in position so they took the stress of the pulling?
